Living Beside Cancer is for adults aged 18+ who are supporting, or have supported, someone affected by cancer. That might be a husband, wife or partner, but it could just as easily be a parent, adult child, brother or sister, other family member, close friend or someone else playing an important supportive role. You do not need to think of yourself as a “carer” to be part of the community. Many people are simply doing their best to support someone they love while also carrying their own worries, responsibilities and emotions. You are welcome whether cancer is something your loved one is going through now, has been through in the past, or continues to affect your life after treatment has finished.Living Beside Cancer exists to give the people around cancer a community of their own - somewhere to connect with others who understand, without any pressure to talk, share or explain more than they want to.
Our events are designed to feel relaxed, welcoming and low-pressure.Depending on the event, that might mean going for a walk, meeting for coffee, having a drink, joining a social activity or simply spending time with people who understand some of what life beside cancer can feel like. There is no expectation to sit in a circle, introduce yourself to everyone or talk about personal experiences. You can chat as much or as little as you want, and the focus is on creating a comfortable community rather than a formal support session. Some events may naturally lead to deeper conversations, while others may just be a chance to get out, meet people and enjoy some time together.
Yes. We recognise that people who are going through cancer, or have been through it themselves, can also be supporting someone else affected by cancer.Living Beside Cancer is centred on the experience of supporting someone, and everyone in a supporting role is welcome, regardless of their own circumstances or cancer experience.
Yes. Living Beside Cancer is open to people supporting someone affected by any type of cancer. The community is not limited to one diagnosis or treatment pathway. As the community grows, we may also offer occasional cancer-specific events or groups where there is enough interest, giving people the option to connect with others whose experiences may be more similar.
Yes. You are very welcome and encouraged to come on your own, but if you would feel more comfortable bringing someone to support you, that is absolutely fine too.We want attending for the first time to feel as easy and low-pressure as possible. Whether you come alone or with someone you trust, you can take part at your own pace and there is no expectation to share anything personal.
Events are free. Some events will require registration so we can manage numbers, while others may be more informal. Each event page will explain exactly what you need to do.
We aim to make events as accessible as possible. Information about routes, terrain, venues and accessibility will be included with each event. If you have specific requirements, please contact us beforehand.
No. Living Beside Cancer is a peer-support and community initiative, not a counselling, therapy, medical or crisis service.
You can follow us on Instagram, sign up for updates, attend events, share the project with others or get in touch about partnerships, venues and other ways of supporting the community.
